As part of the Energy Policy and Conservation Act (EPCA) and the Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) The Department of Energy has proposed new standards for microwave ovens that address standby and off mode energy consumption. The new standards will oblige manufacturers to make models that use significantly less energy when not in use compared to current models. DOE's analysis concentrates on the economic implications of the new standard, including savings in life-cycle costs (LCCs) and simple payback times. DOE also considers benefits external to the DOE including increased energy security and improved environmental quality. The new standards are expected to save consumers about $80 per year on their electricity bill for a countertop combination microwave oven, and around $270 annually on their electric bill for a built-in or over the range combination microwave oven. The savings will more than cover any additional costs that come with implementing the new standards.
